Hard Times Skate Shop is a core skateboard shop located in Portsmouth, VA.  We first opened our doors in June 2012 in the Cradock section of Portsmouth.  The mission was simple, to provide an accessible retail space that caters to the growing needs of skaters in Portsmouth and surrounding areas of Hampton Roads.  Last year we were forced to relocate from our original storefront due to situations beyond our control. We are located at 4361 Portsmouth Blvd.  Hard Times specializes in selling skateboards and skateboard-related products, apparel, and footwear.  Our retail store also has its in-house brand, affectionately named Hard Times, which has a variety of products ranging from stickers, graphic tees to skateboards.  Over the years we have partnered with the City of Portsmouth and other organizations for joint community efforts such as skateboard lessons, screen-printing services and our annual Go Skate Daze Event that features a Juneteenth Jam skateboard contest just to name a few.  Hard Times Skate Shop believes in taking a proactive, hands-on approach in the neighborhood we call home. So we are always actively organizing and involved in events that promote an all-inclusive, healthy, safe environment.  Some of future plans include offering our brand in other retail outlets, secure a permanent location to suit our growing needs, and opening, an indoor skateboard park that would serve as a home for our future nonprofit organization in the Portsmouth area that would have classes that would allow us to teach STEM programs, entrepreneurial studies, and creative arts.

Since the beginning of Hard Times Skate Shop’s inception, Toney Herndon has been the sole principal of Hard Times Skate Shop.  Currently, he handles all the responsibilities of operating the business.  These responsibilities include but are not limited to bookkeeping, customer service, marketing, coordinating events, public relations, branding, and merchandising.
Mr. Herndon’s hands-on approach to business, with a little trial and error, risk-taking, and persistence, has been a great source of experience for him.  Over the last ten years, he has transformed Hard Times Skate Shop from a mere idea into one of the most recognized skateboard shops in the region.  Hard Times Skate Shop has been operating for 12 years and is the only Black-owned skateboard shop in Virginia.  We have also been featured and recognized in numerous national and international publications.  Mr. Herndon is a lifelong resident of Portsmouth and has a B.S Degree in Business Marketing from Norfolk State University.

Our new storefront is  located in the Olde Towne section of Portsmouth at 4361 Portsmouth Blvd. (757) 966-5813 www.hardtimesskateshop.com
